Howard
Sice, a Hopi-Laguna artisan, mainly works in silver
or gold and uses stones as accents to his pieces. He beautifully
engraves his pieces with traditional Southwest and Pueblo imagery.
Howard recently began to use Precious Metal Clay which allows
him to carve the design into the clay and then fire it, leaving the
beautiful design on the silver or gold.Howard
Sice was born on May 25, 1948 in Winslow, Arizona, of a
Hopi mother and Laguna father. He was raised on the Laguna pueblo
in the Village of Paraje. He spent many seasons with his aunts in
Walapi, Kykosmovi and Polacca villages on the Hopi reservation.
Therefore, the Laguna and Hopi culture are both strongly
emphasized in his jewelry design.
In 1972, Howard began teaching himself the
trade of traditional
style silversmithing. In 1985, he added engraving to his repertoire.
Today, Howard expresses his creativity through use of exotic and
rare earth metals, silver, gold and stone work. He uses traditional
Southwest and Pueblo imagery in his contemporary designs.
Howard is recognized for his fine, engraved designs, which have
won him many prestigious awards. He won First Place at the
Heard Museum in Phoenix and Best of the Show at the Northern
Arizona Museum Hopi Show.
He reproduces the designs of ancient pottery or petroglyphs
on
his earrings and pendants. His unique pins are designed from
ancient pottery chards that he has found. He takes the pottery
chard and reproduces the size, shape and design by engraving it
on the silver. These beautiful pins are then accented with a piece
of turquoise.
Howard and his family live in Tucson,
Arizona. In addition to the
beautiful jewelry that he makes, he also makes metal wall hangings
and tables.
